How to Dry Suede Shoes Safely
Caught in the rain? Avoid the temptation to speed up drying with direct heat from radiators and hairdryers. This can cracks and damage suede. Instead, pat your shoes gently with a clean towel, stuff them with paper to hold their shape, and let them air-dry naturally at room temperature.
Cleaning Dirt & Stains from Suede
Make sure your shoes are completely dry before continuing to this step. Use a dedicated suede brush (a brush with soft bristles or a crepe rubber side) and gently brush the suede in the same direction as the fibres. This will lift away dirt while also reviving the soft suede texture.
For light stains
Tackle light stains with care. Use a suede eraser or suede rubber and gently rub the stained area until the mark lifts. Then gently brush the area using a suede brush to restore the suede’s soft texture. This technique is best used on dry stains like dirt or dust.
For stubborn spots
Use a damp cloth with white vinegar or rubbing alcohol or a suede footwear cleaning solution (never water, as this can cause more staining) and lightly dab the stain. Avoid rubbing, as this can make the stain worse. Once completely dry, gently brush the area to restore the suede's texture.
Important tips for suede shoe care
- Never use the same brush you use for polished leather
- Avoid applying too much pressure with your brush. A light touch will go a long way.
- Always do a patch test with cleaning solutions and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
Protect With Suede Spray
Prevention is key when it comes to your suede footwear. To protect your suede shoes or boots from rain, use a quality suede protection spray. This will create an invisible shield against water and stains. When using the protection spray, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Take care not to oversaturate the suede, aim for a light, even coating and allow it to dry naturally at room temperature. This gives the protective layer time to settle and form a protective barrier.
